Posted on 6 m read

Imagine black sand that borders crystal clear water and a volcanic landscape that will make you feel like you are on Mars. That’s right! We are talking about the famous island of Lanzarote, situated in the Canary Islands. In this magical location on the great Atlantic, you can find some of the best beaches in Spain, and that is why we are going to let you in on all of the hidden secrets, especially those of which lie on Papagayo Beach, selected among the best beaches in Spain by National Geographic.

While being a tourist beach enclave, Lanzarote has managed to preserve its essence and nature, becoming a place of unique character. This breathtaking island is famous for the mixture of black, white, and green colors that have influenced the traditions of Lanzarote and the artist César Manrique.

Beaches on the South of the Island are Some of the Best in Spain

Now, we are going to focus on the southern part of Lanzarote, specifically on the Papagayo Beaches. These beaches are located within the spectacular Los Ajaches Natural Park, making them totally unspoiled and protected. For 7km, travelers can enjoy a variety of small coves and golden sand beaches perfect for disconnecting and releasing built-up stress. The beaches within the park include Papagayo Beach, Puerto Muelas, Caleta del Congrio, Playa de la Acera, Playa del Pozo o de la Cruz, Playa Mujeres, Caletón del Cobre, and Caletón de San Marcial.

The most famous, Papagayo Beach, has been awarded and marked as one of the best beaches in Spain. Interestingly, this area used to be a nudist beach but has since changed. If you are someone who enjoys cooling off on a nude beach, you can visit Caleta del Congrio, Playa Mujeres, Playa del Pozo and Puerto Muelas. So you have the opportunity to access all of the beaches within the park, there are parking facilities close by just a short walk to the coves and sandy areas. One of the most engaging and charming features of those who decide to visit is the incredible views of the Islote de Lobos and the neighboring island of Fuerteventura.

“Urban” Beaches

Costa Teguise, Playa Blanca, and Puerto del Carmen are the three places to visit for those who want to be in more urban areas that have a more variety of places close by. Costa Teguise is located on the easter part of the island. Alongside the array of activities available within the city, there is also a great variety of water activities such as Windsurfing, famous for surf lovers.

Puerto del Carmen, located in the southeast, has 6km of beaches stretching along the coastline. They are perfect for swimming as they are sheltered from the characteristic winds of Lanzarote.

Playa Blanca, located in the south, is another tourist enclave on the island. Although it is fairly quiet, its promenade is extremely attractive, borders the Atlantic Ocean, and boasts gorgeous white sand beaches. From Playa Blanca, you can take a boat to visit the neighboring island of Fuerteventura.

If you decide to stay on the southern area of the island, the Municipality of Yaiza is a beautiful town that has conserved its traditional style and is the natural border of the area that was covered in volcanic eruptions that took place between 1730 and 1736. The houses within this community are extremely attractive for visitors due to being well cared for and decorated with flowers. In addition, the contrast of the volcanic rock and white houses will take your breath away, outlining Lanzarote’s architectural traditions.

The Spectacular Beauty of the North

Heading to the north of Lanzarote, Famara Beach sits right next to the town of Caleta de Famara. It is the perfect place for lovers of surfing and windsurfing.

Although it is not a suitable beach for swimming, it is ideal for taking part in these sports due to the strong air currents in the north. In addition, you will be able to enjoy a spectacular landscape as incredible vertical walls of the Famara Massif border the beach.

Just a few kilometers further north is Playa del Risco, protected by the Massif itself. This beach is difficult to access, as the walking route is about an hour long.

It may seem long, but we guarantee that it is a worthwhile excursion, especially when you arrive and see the natural area and views of the island of La Graciosa. If the views of this island aren’t enough, you can venture to it and visit the beach of Las Conchas, a virgin beach that provides a haven for those who want to relax and disconnect.

Famara Beach

As we go back to Lanzarote, in the Northwest area are located Cala Quemada and Playa Arena connected to the fishing village of Quemada. During low tides, you can walk from one beach to the other; however, if the tide is high, you will have to go up a small hill and go down. Though the journey may take you a bit more time, when you arrive at the top of the hill, you can witness the beautiful views of the black sand beaches and unique volcanic landscape.
