The Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) is hosting the second Los Cabos Open of Surf this month. Running from June 16 – 22, the Los Cabos Open of Surf 2014 will feature a variety of well-known North American surfers competing in a 6-star event on Zippers Beach in San Jose del Cabo, Mexico. In addition to the surfing competition, the Los Cabos Open of Surf 2014 will also bring plenty of fun and entertainment for local surfers and visitors alike: a music festival with Mexican and international talent, local cuisine, events and more.

Brian Robbins, the ASP North America Tour Manager, says, “We’ve seen so many incredible performances from the underground Latinos in recent events. The Los Cabos Open of Surf will be the perfect platform for young Latin surfers to mix it up with some big international names and establish themselves on a global level while securing big points towards their ranking.”

This year, the Los Cabos Open of Surf 2014 is adding an ASP Women’s 6-Star Qualification Series event, the very first ASP Women’s 6-Star competition ever in Mexico! During its inaugural year in 2013, the Los Cabos Open of Surf was only a Men’s ASP 6-Star event, and now it’s the only combined Men’s and Women’s 6-Star competition in North America. Baja California’s Minister of Tourism Ruben Reachi stated, “We´re really happy to team up with the ASP in bringing some of the world’s best male and female surfers to Los Cabos and being part of history.”

Los Cabos’ status as a year-round surfing destination has made it a hotspot for surfers since the 1970s! Located at the southern end of the Baja California Peninsula, Los Cabos has the Sea of Cortez on its eastern side and the Pacific Ocean to the west. This region is known for its excellent weather, with warm temperatures all year and very little rain, making it just right for all kinds of water sports. Typically the Sea of Cortez is best for surfing in the spring and summer, while the Pacific Ocean is ideal in the fall and winter, but you’ll find great surfing opportunities throughout the year in both areas. The very best months for surfing in Los Cabos are June through August, but this time of year is also the most crowded. To avoid the crowds and still get good waves, try visiting Los Cabos from September through November, especially the Pacific side!

While you’re enjoying your surfing vacation in Los Cabos, make sure to check out everything else this destination has to offer! The exciting Cabo San Lucas marina, great fishing opportunities, snorkeling and diving tours, the famous Land’s End Arch, charming San Jose del Cabo and so much more.
