Carnaval 2014 in the Mexican Caribbean

Taste of Caribbean Culture

In the next few weeks, the world will turn its gaze toward Brazil for its huge Carnaval celebrations. However, the Mexican Caribbean has some bright Carnaval traditions of its own! Every year around February and March, destinations like the Riviera Maya and Cozumel host over a week of glittering parades and entertaining concerts in the region’s biggest cities.

Each city hosts a pageant a few weeks before Carnaval in order to choose the King and Queen. These two winners will be present at all of the upcoming events, like extensive parades through town, public dances, exciting concerts with Mexican musical groups, fireworks and so much more.

Colours and dancing

This year, the Carnaval dates are all set in region’s biggest destinations:

Playa del Carmen 2014: February 23 – March 4, with the parades along the famous 5th Avenue and all other events at Plaza 28 de Julio.

Cozumel Carnaval 2014: February 26 – March 4, with the parades along Avenida Rafael E. Melgar (the main seaside avenue in downtown Cozumel) and other events at the Moby Dick Show Center.
