Mayan Honey Treatments: A Special Spa Experience At Sandos Caracol

Category : Ecology, Sandos News

According to the National Honey Board, Americans consume about 1.3 pounds of honey per person each year. Now more than ever, people are realizing the amazing versatility of the all-natural ingredient. Its sweet taste is old news, but the popularity of honey and it’s skin-saving benefits is making its way into many beauty products and treatments. Honey is a humectant, so it attracts and retains moisture which makes it ideal for cleansers, creams, shampoos, conditioners and spa treatments.

Home to a Mayan honeybee colony on site, The Sandos Caracol Eco-Resort & Spa located in the Mexican Caribbean, infuses local culture and traditions into their spa treatments. In an effort to protect the endangered specials, the resort is home to a Mayan honeybee colony. Twice a year a Mayan Shaman performs a ritual bee ceremony, which requests permission from the bees to extract honey for use in the spa’s rituals such as the Nourishing Ancient Maya Ritual, a therapeutic treatment that feeds the skin with vitamins and nutrients.

Sandos Hotels and Resorts Participates in the International Coastal Cleanup

Category : Ecology

On September 29th, Sandos Hotels and Resorts participated in the International Coastal Cleanup, an annual event sponsored by the Ocean Conservancy, to clean and care for beaches and waterways.

We thank all of our Sandistas for volunteering their time in this important event. Again, this year, we reached our goal of having 50 Sandistas participate in this very important ecological cause. The data from our effort has been delivered to SOFEMAT so we can track the impact Sandos Caracol has generated in this very important international cleaning and so we can also learn more about how to control waste in our oceans and waterways.

We are very proud of this work and congratulate and thank our hotel staff for their efforts.

Mangrove Crab Reproduction At Sandos Caracol

2

Category : Uncategorized

During the months of September and October guests at Sandos Caracol Eco Resport and Spa will have an opportunity to witness the peak time in the reproductive cycle of mangrove crabs.

These large, land-dwelling crabs live in and among mangroves, and they have a variety of significant ecological roles. They maintain the energy chain in mangrove areas by burying and consuming vegetative debris, and they contribute to the airation and health of the ground by burrowing their large holes in the earth and mud.

Mangrove crab eggs, which they lay on the edges of the water, provide a key food source for young fish.  Mangrove crabs, themselves, are also a key source of food for threatened birds, such as the Crab Plover.

Removing these crabs from an area has been shown to cause increases in chemicals such as sulfides and ammonium which negativly impacts the overall health and productivity of the mangrove forest.

Visitors to Sandos Caracol can learn more about the important role of these crabs by reviewing some of the following resources:

Smithsonian Marine Station

Network of Aqauculture Centers

Sandos Playacar visited Lol-Bel and Carrillo Puerto

Category : Social

On Saturday, September 1, 2012, Sandos Playacar visited the local Mayan villages of Lo-Bel and Carrillo Puerto in the rural area of southern Quintana Roo. Our mission was to bring household items, such as clothes and shoes, donated by our Sandista staff to these indigenous communities. Lol-Be and Carrillo are in Chemax Municipality of Yucatan Mexico, approximately three hours from Playa del Carmen. The total population is 630 inhabitants, the majority of which are children.

Most members of the communities live in traditional indigenous households, or palapas, which are handmade from local wood and palm leaves. They do not have toilet facilities inside their homes, and the majority of homes, as is traditional in the Yucatan, have dirt floors and consist of one room that houses an entire family. Community members wash their clothes by hand and typically cook on an open fire. Only one of every 25 households has a television.

Public services are very limited in these communities. A doctor visits for review and consultation every 10 days, but emergencies cases are treated with traditional medicine and transfered to the town of Valladolid due to a lack of basic facilities. Both of these communities offer kindergarten for children, but there are no local primary or secondary schools available in these towns.

Habitants have few schooling options and the majority do not complete their education past the primary level.

Sandos Playacar Beach Resort & Spa is grateful to all of our Sandista staff members who donated items and voluntarily worked extra hours to support this project. These donations make a difference in the daily lives and health of these communities. In keeping with our commitment to sustainable tourism, we hope to build a lasting relationship with Lo-Bel and Carrillo and plan to provide more information about how guests at Sandos Playacar can support this project by donating key items.

The Mayas’ health and beauty secrets, revealed

1

Category : Sandos News, Uncategorized

Sandos Caracol Eco Resort & Spa (5 star hotel in Playa del Carmen, Mexico) recently presented Xcalacoco Experience to the world, a set of activities including health and beauty treatments inspired by the Mayas’ ancient wisdom.

Among a wide range of experiences, this hotel includes spa treatments such as the Ancient Mayan Ritual, using honey -a very healthy resource well known by the Maya for thousands of years- to moisturize, nourish and repair skin.

The sustainable use of local plants also inspired the Mayan Healing Ritual, a traditional technique of regeneration and hydration using Chaya and Aloe Vera to stimulate collagen natural production and repair sun-damaged skin.

Extracted from the Mayan medicinal wisdom deepest secrets, Ancient Well-Being is a special treatment based on the benefits of cactus and cucumber, which due to their high content of vitamins, amino acids and proteins give your skin a long-lasting moisturizing effect. It helps to prevent flaccidity and protects against premature aging by stimulating cell regeneration.

Spa treatments are complementary to other activities offered by Xcalacoco Experience: walking tours, bicycle and boat, swimming in cenotes, visiting the aviary, encounters with deers, but also environmental awareness activities such as the ‘Plant a tree’ programme. The wellbeing of body and soul also inspired the ancient ritual of Temazcal, called zumpul-che by the Maya, a steam bath with aromatic herbs. This practice has survived from the ages thanks to several native communities’ traditions. Its use is both therapeutic and relaxing as well as spiritual.

Sandos Caracol Eco Resort & Spa is located in front of a beautiful white sand beach in Riviera Maya, 15 minutes from Playa del Carmen and 45 minutes from Cancun International Airport. It consists of 78 villas with a total of 956 rooms and Junior Suites. It was built over a large area on the edge of the exotic jungle, surrounded by lush vegetation between cenotes, mangroves and natural lagoons, all set in an ecological environment ideal for those who like living within nature.

Born in Benidorm (Spain) in the 90’s, Sandos Hotels & Resorts is a growing company. After extending its borders to Mexico, has expansion plans in this country and Dominican Republic. Its business strategy is based on three pillars: differentiation, sustainability and innovation.
