How Sandos Is Celebrating Mexico’s Independence Day

Mariachis and Beach Parties!

Mexican Independence Day 2016 falls on Thursday September 15 and Friday September 16, and at Sandos resorts we’re dressing up in green, white and red in honor of this important event. Keep reading to hear about what we celebrate and how we celebrate!

A Little Mexico Independence Day History

Mexico’s Independence Day technically falls on September 16, but the main festivities take place on the evening of September 15. The dates commemorate the early morning in 1810 when priest Miguel Hidalgo addressed a crowd in front of the church in the small town of Hidalgo, urging the people to revolt against Spain, thus beginning the Mexican War for Independence.

Today, celebrations begin with dinners and parties at homes, bars, restaurants and town squares throughout Mexico, with people shouting the “Grito de la Independencia” (Cry for Independence) around 11 pm. At this time of year, you’ll see Mexican flags and all kinds of decoration in green, white and red  throughout cities and towns, and September 15 provide a good excuse for tacos, tequila and patriotic parties. At Sandos Hotels & Resorts, our four all inclusive resorts on the beaches of Mexico will of course be celebrating our country’s independence alongside all our guests.

Sandos Mexican Independence Day Activities

We don’t want to give away too many surprises, but here’s a quick list of what will be going on at each of our Sandos resorts in Mexico to celebrate this Mexican Independence Day on Thursday, September 15:

Sandos Finisterra Los Cabos (Cabo San Lucas): This resort usually hosts a weekly White Party on the beach every Wednesday night, but for this week only we are moving the event to Thursday night to create a “Mexican White Party” with Mexican food stands, traditional Mexican fair games (like the famous “Loteria”), and a special show. The party starts on the beach at 6 pm.

Sandos Caracol Eco Resort (Playa del Carmen): Guests will have the opportunity to try authentic Mexican cuisine, with various food stands set up in the evening around El Nido snack bar in the center of the resort. You just might see some mariachis playing classic Mexican tunes, as well!

Sandos Playacar Beach Resort (Playa del Carmen): This resort is known for its daily beach parties, and September 15 will be no exception. Guests can enjoy a fun-filled Mexican party to get into the independence day spirit!

Sandos Cancun Luxury Resort (Cancun): The daytime activities on September 15 will take place in the pool and beach areas, with a taco lunch, a mechanical bull and more surprises. In the evening, Bar Two (by the beach) will have a Mexican craft market, mariachis and a Mexican show, plus of course the live transmission of the Cry for Independence at 11 pm.
