MARTI Certifies Eco Friendly Practices at Sandos Caracol

Category : Ecology, Sandos News

The eco atmosphere at Sandos Caracol Eco Resort & Spa has always been a huge hit with our guests, and environmental organizations love us, too!

MARTI (the MesoAmerican Reef Tourism Initiative), who strives to maintain and enhance the area’s beautiful reefs for future generations, interviewed our Director of Ecology and Environment after Sandos Caracol ticked all their boxes for best environmental practices. Check out MARTI’s  full article and interview here.

We’re very proud of the natural and environmentally friendly setting at Sandos Caracol, an all inclusive resort in the Riviera Maya with extensive mangrove forests, programs for supporting local Mayan villages, and our very own thriving community of native wild animals who have chosen the resort as their home.

Xcaret and Xel-Ha Host the 7th Sacred Mayan Journey

Category : Ecology, Social

With incredible parks in Mexico’s Riviera Maya like Xcaret, Xel-Ha and Xplor, Xperiencias Xcaret is known throughout the region for its unbeatable cultural events. They really put on a show with detailed costumes, beautiful music and innovative ways for the crowd to experience every single event.

Last week, we were invited to attend their annual Sacred Mayan Journey (or “Travesía Sagrada Maya”, in Spanish). This 3-day event recreates an ancient local tradition once done by the area’s Mayan community. Canoes of athletes row all the way from the Riviera Maya to the nearby island of Cozumel to worship the Mayan goddess Ixchel, then row all the way back the following day.

To start off the Travesía Sagrada Maya, Thursday night was the Interactive Mayan Market at Xcaret park. Guests could purchase small bags of cacao beans, which would then be used to exchange for goods like seashells, fruits, vegetables, chiles, necklaces and honey. Performers in simple white Mayan garb posed as the market’s vendors, selling their wares to customers while dancers recreated ancient Mayan chants and traditions in the midst of it all.

After the market, everyone made their way down to Xcaret’s beach, where they sat on the sand or on waterside bleachers to see a Mayan shaman and endless dancers bless the next day’s journey for the canoers who would participate in the Travesía Sagrada Maya. Beautiful women danced on the sand, Mayan warriors performed acrobatics and shamans cleansed the area with copal smoke. Once again, Xcaret managed to put on an amazing show!

Friday morning, we woke up bright and early to make it down to Xel-Ha park at dawn. A crowd gathered around the inlet to cheer on their family and friends who would make the journey across the Caribbean waters to Cozumel. The first canoes slipped through the mist into the inlet, then out into the open sea.

We walked through the jungle to the coast of Xel-Ha, where we were greeted by a jaw-dropping sunrise as the canoers rowed into the horizon on their way to the island.

Thank you again, Xperiencias Xcaret, for preserving the Riviera Maya’s fascinating Mayan culture with this one-of-a-kind event!

This will be a very special gastronomical experience.

Nature lovers do not worry, we keep doing the complete tour with the visit to the canyon.

Sandos Playacar Launches Community Donation Program

Category : Ecology, Innovation, Sandos News

Since 2010, Sandos Playacar has been offering much needed support to communities in the Riviera Maya through our donation program.  On Saturday December 15, 2012 this program became formalized into Ayudanos a Ayudar (Help us Help).  Our Sandistas in our Playacar hotel have consistently volunteered their time and donated usable household and personal items to social organizations in Playa del Carmen for distribution to low-income families and individuals.

Sandos will now officially expand this program to invite guests  to donate new and used items in our lobby donation centers.  The items collected will be delivered directly to the rural Mayan communities of Cholul, Santa Cruz, and Cocoyol in southern Quintana Yucatan.

The Ayudanos Ayudar program has been designed to encourage guests and Sandistas to participate in practices related to Sandos underlying mission of sustainable tourism.  By donating new and used items guests can offer direct and useful economic support to communities in need.  At the same time, Sandos is able to donate usable items such as sheets, pillows, and household appliances, which allows us to reduce waste.

Sandos appreciates the dedication of the staff members who have headed this project, Guadelpude Barron (Eco), Humberto Marin (Director of Housekeeping), and Enrique Perez (Web Relations) with key support from hotel director Ivan Tapia and from the maintenance and Eco Club staff .  Like many projects and at Sandos the launch of the Ayudanos a Ayudar program is a testament of our commitment to creating innovation and sustainable tourism programs.  We invite guests to stop by the lobby donation center and donate new or used goods during your stay with us.

Sandos Caracol Participates in the 10th Annual Sea Turtle Festival

Category : Ecology, Sandos News

On October 28, 2012 Sandos Hotels and Resorts had the honor of participating in the 10th annual Sea Turtle Festival, a series of workshops, lectures, and ceremonies organized to celebrate the end of the sea turtle nesting season.  The event is organized by a group of businesses and environmental non-profits from Tulum and the Riviera Maya, including Amigos de Sian Ka’an, Global Vision International, and Centro Ecologico Akumal.

The sea turtles that nest on the beaches of the Riviera Maya, Cancun, and in the northern Yucatan are typically green sea turtles.  The females have an innate instinct that allows them to return to the coastal area where they were born to create nests and lay their eggs, so families of sea turtles often have the same birthplace.  Females return to the beaches every two to four years to nest, and the peak nesting period takes place between June and July.  Hatchlings often emerge from the nests at the full moon, using the light to orient themselves and enter the water.

Green sea turtles, like many other species of sea turtles, are in danger of extinction.  The main ecological threats to these animals includes diseases contracted by pollution and poor water quality and fatal injuries caused by fishing gear and boats.  Human activities, such as construction, the commercial use of turtle eggs, and the mishandling of hatchings also endanger nesting areas, decreasing the number of juvenile turtles and, in turn threatening the population.

Sandos Caracol Eco Resort and Spa was proud to participate in this important cultural and ecological event.  Armando Uscanga and his team, who perform Mayan ceremonies in our Xcalacoco Experience, presented a special ceremony dedicated to honoring the vitality of the sea turtles. We encourage guests to learn more about sea turtle conservation by visiting some of the following educational websites and viewing our video:

Sandos Caracol Hosts A Visit From Award-winning Photojournalist Jace Rivers

Category : Ecology, Sandos News

On October 19th and 20th, 2012 Sandos Caracol Eco Resort and Spa had the pleasure of hosting Jace Rivers, a US-based photographer, who visited Sandos Caracol to create a photo pictorial of the Xcalacoco Experience and our Mayan ceremonies.

An internationally award-winning photojournalist, Jace specializes in outdoor photography and has covered stories in over 40 countries.  His photographs have been featured in publications such as National Geographic, Outside Magazine, AsiaSpa, Traveler, and Men’s Health.

Jace’s photos of Xcalacoco and the Mayan ceremonies will be featured in our in-room magazine and, later this winter, Sandos Caracol will offer selected prints for exhibition and sale in our guest relations area.

Sandos Hotels and Resorts will be publishing a full portfolio of this work in early November on a new website dedicated to our New Era celebration scheduled to take place on December 21-22, 2012. We look forward to sharing Jace’s work with our visitors, and are very honored to have worked with such a talented and dedicated photojournalist.

Sandos Hotels and Resorts: Caring for Local Animals and Wildlife

2

Category : Ecology

At Sandos Hotels and Resorts, as part of our company's core vision and mission, we aim to incorporate an active and comprehensive policy regarding ecological sustainability and care for our global environment. These policies include our practices towards the care of captive and wild animals that our visitors encounter on our properties.

In our main eco-resort, Sandos Caracol Eco Resort & Spa, all of the animals contained in enclosures, are indigenous to the region. Many of these animals suffer from poor care and ill health in both captivity and the wild. Our resident donkeys and dogs, for example, were adopted from areas in the Yucatan and would likely live without proper care if we had not given them refuge.

Our intention is to enact thoughtful and well-planned sterilization and breed and release programs for these animals, so populations that may grow out of control, such as cats, dogs, deer, or raccoons will self-regulate and not have to depend on human care or suffer from poor care and poor health.
Through this program we also intend to aid animals that may be in danger of extinction or unaccustomed to human care, such as deer, birds, and sea turtles, to return to their natural habitats into local wildlife zones that have little or no human infrastructures or activities.

While we do not run any official animal shelter or rescue programs, Sandos Hotels and Resorts aims to provide — when possible– temporary or permanent care for both wild and captive animals that require rescue and rehabilitation. We are proud to offer our “Cat Cafes” to wild cats that live on our properties. Through these feeding and water stations, we support the work of local animal shelters including Coco’s Cat Rescue, well-known for their extensive work in animal rescue and sterilization.

Sandos is also pleased to announce that we were recently successful in ending a long-term contract that allowed for the display and photographic rights of captive animals to interact with guests in Sandos Caracol. This contract preceded Sandos’ acquisition of the Caracol property. We have prohibited animals from being used for profit in photographs in Sandos Caracol as of August, 2012.

We encourage our guests to experience and also respect the local wildlife. An integral part of this is to view them and enjoy their activities, but to refrain from feeding any wild animal. This includes the many wild raccoons, monkeys, birds, wild cats or dogs, fish, and coati that live on our properties.

At Sandos we aim to promote an awareness of and an appreciation for our local wildlife and habitats, and we hope that our guests will participate in our conservation practices when interacting with animals who live on and also populate our properties.

Mayan Honey Treatments: A Special Spa Experience At Sandos Caracol

Category : Ecology, Sandos News

According to the National Honey Board, Americans consume about 1.3 pounds of honey per person each year. Now more than ever, people are realizing the amazing versatility of the all-natural ingredient. Its sweet taste is old news, but the popularity of honey and it’s skin-saving benefits is making its way into many beauty products and treatments. Honey is a humectant, so it attracts and retains moisture which makes it ideal for cleansers, creams, shampoos, conditioners and spa treatments.

Home to a Mayan honeybee colony on site, The Sandos Caracol Eco-Resort & Spa located in the Mexican Caribbean, infuses local culture and traditions into their spa treatments. In an effort to protect the endangered specials, the resort is home to a Mayan honeybee colony. Twice a year a Mayan Shaman performs a ritual bee ceremony, which requests permission from the bees to extract honey for use in the spa’s rituals such as the Nourishing Ancient Maya Ritual, a therapeutic treatment that feeds the skin with vitamins and nutrients.

Sandos Hotels and Resorts Participates in the International Coastal Cleanup

Category : Ecology

On September 29th, Sandos Hotels and Resorts participated in the International Coastal Cleanup, an annual event sponsored by the Ocean Conservancy, to clean and care for beaches and waterways.

We thank all of our Sandistas for volunteering their time in this important event. Again, this year, we reached our goal of having 50 Sandistas participate in this very important ecological cause. The data from our effort has been delivered to SOFEMAT so we can track the impact Sandos Caracol has generated in this very important international cleaning and so we can also learn more about how to control waste in our oceans and waterways.

We are very proud of this work and congratulate and thank our hotel staff for their efforts.

Sandos Hotels: a new ‘green’ tourism model

Category : Ecology

Sandos Hotels & Resorts has created a new green line of hotels, consisting of Sandos San Blas in Tenerife (Canary Islands) and Sandos Caracol in Riviera Maya (Mexico). Both have something in common that make them very different to any other accommodation: the natural areas that they protect and show to the travelers.

Sandos Caracol is an eco-resort whose design and building was made taking in consideration the natural wonder that surrounds. So, main attractions in the hotel are precisely its natural areas: beach and mangrove. In order to teach about the place’s history and biodiversity, Xcalacoco Experience was created as a collection of activities around Maya’s customs and relationship with environment.

More than a simply ecotouristic attraction, Sandos Caracol efforts are to offer to its guests five stars holidays with a minimum environment impact. It is the first hotel in the world using a homemade electric car with solar panels to carry clients and luggage; moreover they are using solar panels to heat water in rooms. But taking care of the Earth needs a social task too and it is made on one side with guests, who can go to environmental awareness and responsible tourism courses and on the other side with local community, helding collaborations with public institutions of Playa del Carmen (Quintana Roo) in beaches and underprivileged children care.

Thousands miles away, in Tenerife, Sandos San Blas Hotel hosts the Environmental Reserve under the same name. This is one little strip that has a great flora and fauna diversity, besides prehistoric settlements remains of first Canary people, the Guanches. Visiting this place is a must to this hotel’s guests, though being a guest is not a requirement to do the visit. There History and Nature join.

Both hotels apply environmental politics to their activity: in energetic matters every possible renewable energy is used, also efficient electric systems; in catering the point is to reach ‘slow food’ idea, so this way they can guarantee that every edible has been produced no more than 50 miles away and, if possible, in environmental respectful ways; also in water saving and lots of small gestures that make a big effort. These initiatives have been recognized, in all Sandos hotels, by Travelife Golden Award.

Sandos Hotels & Resorts shows this and more news in in International Tourism Show of Catalunya (held in Barcelona from April 20 to 22). Sandos is a sound company that nowadays administers six hotels, located in Spain and Mexico, and has development plans in Dominican Republic. The pillars of its strategy are innovation, differentiation and sustainability.
